A musical masterpiece for the ages that serves up deep nostalgic memories, completed by Tchaikovsky in a year. I was 4 years old when I watched Fantasia and came home to perform it silently on a piano keyboard I drew on the dinner table and imagined its sounds as fingers met wood, for we were too poor to afford a piano, much less lessons. Days passed as I worked tenaciously on hand-drawn pentagram paper to write the music score from memory with the notes played by each instrument, never taken classes previously. I could hear each instrument in my mind come to life and speak its frequencies, speed, tonalities, colors, clef range, and accidentals being used with phenomenal ease. Day and night, I worked on this score until I finished my most cherished theme. Then, I took on An Affair to Remember next, never hearing a keyboard sound to check myself out.
What a surprise it was that, when my parents finally took me to a music conservatory at age 5 (I saved lunch money to pay for classes), Swan Lake was the first musical work we studied … and Tchaikovsky was the first composer I performed on the keyboard.
A truly beautiful and inspired masterpiece, thank you for posting it!
